History
The Garden, located in the old Detroit Hotel, is the city's oldest restaurant.
Built in 1890 by John Williams from Detroit, Michigan and Peter Demens, an immigrant from St Petersburg Russia, it was the first hotel in the city.
Both men, in addition to being the founders of the city, were business partners in a railroad line going from Tampa, around the bay, to the undeveloped Pinellas peninsula.
The right to name the city was earned by Peter Demens after winning a coin flip. John Williams, in turn, named the Hotel.
Over the years, St Petersburg, the Detroit Hotel and the Garden were host to many well known guests. Among others, Babe Ruth often visited the area. Many other great baseball players on spring training frequented the Garden, as it was the earliest restaurant and bar within walking distance of the Al Lang field. Jim Morrison, a St Petersburg native, is known to have played at The Garden.
The Garden has always been a well known music venue; more recently, Ringo Star of the Beatles came to enjoy an outdoor afternoon lunch at the restaurant.
Today, we continue to welcome visitors and city residents. We are known for our live jazz, good food and outdoor atmosphere. Of our live musicians, trombonist Buster Cooper has played and toured for 10 years all over the world with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Herbie Hancock. He is now playing every Friday and Saturday evening at The Garden, which he has done since 1995. His band offers true world-class jazz.

The Lobby Martini Bar is located in the upstairs section of The Garden with entrances from the courtyard and inside the resturant. It is fully equiped with a full liquor bar and live DJ's every night it is open.
